Maps are Back!

We have had issues with maps on OurHautedTravels.com and PANICd.com for a few years now. With taking a few days to figure some coding and programming out, our maps are now back using Google My Maps.

Maps are back

Since the creation of PANICd.com, we have had a dynamic map that was attached to the database that would allow visitors to browse locations to find out information about specific buildings and locations. A few years ago, we lost this feature and have not had the time to go in and reprogram the database.

We also lost this feature showing locations that we have visited through OurHauntedTravels.com, but now, after a few days of testing and programming, we have this feature back.

Integration

We will spend some time now over the next few weeks to get the data tweaked and updated to show all of the locations. Some of the places are currently not showing due to address issues, but these are being updated as fast as possible. We also want to add photos and as we complete documenting locations, more links will populate the map for the locations.

If you would like to create your own custom maps, here is some useful information about Google My Maps that we would like to share with you.

Using Google My Maps

Google My Maps is a powerful and versatile tool that allows users to create personalized maps tailored to their specific needs. This platform enables individuals to design maps featuring custom markers, routes, and various layers, facilitating a unique way to visualize information geographically. Whether you are planning a trip, organizing an event, or simply want to document places of interest, Google My Maps provides the features necessary to create a comprehensive and interactive mapping experience. Here’s a detailed guide on how to get started and make the most of this innovative feature:

Getting Started

  1. Visit Google My Maps. This is the official site where you can access all the mapping tools offered by Google.

  2. Sign in with your Google account. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one to utilize the full functionality of Google My Maps.

  3. Click on the “Create a new map” button. This action will take you to a blank map interface where you can begin your mapping journey.

Creating Your Map

  1. Add a Title and Description: Click on the default title “Untitled map” to rename your map. Providing a clear title and an informative description enhances the usability of your map and helps others understand its purpose.

  2. Add Markers: Utilize the marker tool to place points of interest on your map. You can search for locations or click directly on the map to drop a marker, which can represent anything from restaurants to landmarks.

  3. Draw Lines and Shapes: Use the line tool to create routes or highlight specific areas on your map. This feature is particularly useful for planning travel itineraries or outlining regions for events.

  4. Add Layers: Organize your map by adding layers for different categories or themes. For instance, you could have one layer for dining options and another for attractions, allowing for a more structured approach to navigation.

Customizing Your Map

  1. Change Marker Icons: Customize the appearance of markers to differentiate between locations. Google My Maps offers a variety of icons and colors that can help convey specific meanings, such as distinguishing between hotels, parks, and historical sites.

  2. Import Data: You can import data from a CSV or KML file to populate your map. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who have large datasets or existing maps they want to integrate into Google My Maps.

  3. Share Your Map: Click on the share button to send your map to others or make it public. You can control who has access to your map, whether it’s just for personal use, shared with friends, or available for anyone to view online.

Using Your Map

  1. Access on Mobile: Use the Google Maps app to access your custom maps on mobile devices. This functionality ensures that your personalized maps are always at your fingertips, allowing for easy navigation while on the go.

  2. Get Directions: Click on your markers to get directions or additional information. This feature enhances the usability of your map, providing real-time navigation options directly from your customized locations.

Tips for Effective Mapping

  • Keep your map organized by using clear titles and descriptions for each marker. This practice not only aids in clarity but also helps anyone viewing the map to quickly understand its content.

  • Use different colors and icons to categorize locations effectively. Color-coding can make your map more visually appealing and easier to interpret at a glance.

  • Regularly update your map to reflect any changes or new locations. Keeping your map current ensures that it remains a reliable resource for you and others who may use it.

With these steps and tips, you can create and customize your own maps using Google My Maps, making it easier to visualize and share important locations and routes. This tool not only enhances personal planning but also facilitates collaboration and communication with others, allowing for a richer mapping experience that can be tailored to any purpose.
