St. Augustine Lighthouse

In July of 2006 and again in July of 2010, we visited the St. Augustine Light House. Little did we know that in 2010, we would begin our paranormal research adventure, starting with this location

The St. Augustine Light Station is a private-aid to navigation and an active, working lighthouse in St. Augustine, Florida. The current lighthouse stands at the north end of Anastasia Island and was built between 1871 and 1874. The Lighthouse is located at 81 Lighthouse Avenue, St. Augustine, FL 32080. To find out more about tours and hours of operation, please check out the St. Augustine Lighthouse website.

f you haven't heard our story before, Marianne and I visited the St. Augustine Lighthouse on our honeymoon in 2006. When we returned to St. Augustine in 2010, Marianne found another way that we could visit the light house, but this time it was at night with all of the lights off. This was intriguing to us. We never heard of anything called a ghost hunt before, were not even sure what that was.

From a non-paranormal aspect, the St. Augustine Lighthouse is a great example of a restored and maintained property. The museum inside of the keeper's quarters houses some interesting maritime memorabilia as well. The views from the top of the light are simply spectacular.

St. Augustine was the site of the first lighthouse established in Florida by the new, territorial, American Government in 1824. According to some archival records and maps, this "official" American lighthouse was placed on the site of an earlier watchtower built by the Spanish as early as the late 16th century. A map of St. Augustine made by Baptista Boazio in 1589, depicting Sir Francis Drake's attack on the city, shows an early wooden watch tower near the Spanish structure, which was described as a "beacon" in Drake's account. By 1737, Spanish authorities built a more permanent tower from coquina taken from a nearby quarry on the island. Archival records are inconclusive as to whether the Spanish used the coquina tower as a lighthouse, but it seems plausible, given the levels of maritime trade by that time. The structure was regularly referred to as a "lighthouse" in documents—including ship's logs and nautical charts—dating to the British Period beginning in 1763.

If you would like to learn more about the history of this lighthouse please watch our following paranormal history profile video.

I have made this statement before, and if you do some searching on the Internet, this lighthouse almost always shows up in the top 10 most haunted lighthouses in the United States. If you would like to hear more about the paranormal activity that takes places at the lighthouse, check out our "Ghost Stories and Folklore" video about the site below.

As I mentioned, in 2010, this was the location that brought us to the path of paranormal researchers. It was the first time we ever experienced a ghost hunt and it sparked off something inside of both us to research and find out more. In the following video, we talk about that ghost hunt and do a review of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, Dark of the Moon experience.

If you have been to the St. Augustine Lighthouse before, please share your experiences with us down in the comments below, we would love to hear from you.
