Niagara Falls and Oakwood Cemetery: A Day of Daredevils, Tragedies, History, and Haunted Legends

21 min read

There are some places in the world that no matter how many times you see them in photographs, documentaries, or television programs, nothing can truly prepare you for experiencing them in person. Niagara Falls is certainly one of those places. The tremendous power of the water, the thunderous roar of the waterfalls, and the incredible scenery create an experience that is almost impossible to describe. However, for us at Our Haunted Travels, Niagara Falls is much more than a beautiful natural attraction. It is a place filled with centuries of history, incredible human accomplishments, heartbreaking tragedies, daring adventures, and mysterious legends that continue to fascinate visitors from around the world.

Niagara Falls and Oakwood Cemetery: A Day of Daredevils, Tragedies, History, and Haunted Legends

On July 12, 2026, during our summer travels through New York, we made our way into Niagara Falls to spend the final portion of our travel day exploring two fascinating locations. Our first destination was the world-famous Niagara Falls State Park, where we planned to record historical information and discuss the ghost stories and folklore associated with the falls. Afterward, we would travel to nearby Oakwood Cemetery, where several famous daredevils, historical figures, and individuals connected to the history of Niagara Falls are buried.

We had already spent a considerable amount of time traveling, but we were looking forward to exploring these locations. Anyone who follows Our Haunted Travels knows that we enjoy visiting places where history and paranormal folklore intersect. Niagara Falls certainly fits that description. Although millions of tourists visit the falls every year to admire their natural beauty, many may not realize how many fascinating stories are connected to the surrounding landscape.

What began as a relatively straightforward afternoon of sightseeing and filming would turn into an unforgettable experience involving incredible scenery, historical discoveries, famous gravesites, and one particularly frustrating search for a grave that we never managed to locate.

Arriving at Niagara Falls State Park

We arrived in Niagara Falls later in the day and found a parking lot outside the main park area. After gathering our camera equipment and everything we needed for filming, we began walking toward the falls.

Almost immediately, we could hear the unmistakable sound of the Niagara River. There is something remarkable about hearing that much water moving with such incredible force. As we continued walking, the sound became louder, and we began to get our first glimpses of the rushing water.

We followed the walking areas along the river toward the falls, stopping occasionally to take photographs and appreciate the scenery. It was an absolutely incredible experience.

One of the things that struck us most was the contrast between the beauty of the river and the tremendous danger that exists within its waters. In certain areas, the river appears relatively peaceful. However, as the water approaches the brink of the falls, its speed and power become unmistakable.

Standing along the river and watching the water move toward the edge gave us an entirely new appreciation for the people who had lost their lives at Niagara Falls.

We have researched numerous stories about individuals who attempted to go over the falls in barrels, swim through the dangerous rapids, or perform other extraordinary stunts. Reading about those events is one thing. Actually standing beside the river and witnessing the power of the water is something completely different.

It is difficult to imagine anyone voluntarily placing themselves in those conditions.

Yet, throughout history, people have done exactly that.

Some were motivated by fame and fortune. Others wanted to prove that they could accomplish something that had never been done before. Unfortunately, many of those attempts ended in tragedy.

As we continued walking, we found ourselves thinking about the individuals whose graves we planned to visit later that afternoon.

The History Behind America's Oldest State Park

Niagara Falls State Park holds an important place in American history because it is recognized as the oldest state park in the United States. The park was established in 1885 following a movement to preserve the natural beauty of Niagara Falls and protect the surrounding landscape from excessive commercial development. During the nineteenth century, Niagara Falls had become one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. Visitors traveled great distances to witness the incredible waterfalls, and businesses quickly recognized the financial opportunities associated with tourism.

Unfortunately, much of the land surrounding the falls eventually fell into private ownership. Visitors were frequently charged admission to access certain viewing areas, and commercial structures began interfering with the natural scenery. Concerned citizens, artists, and conservationists began advocating for the preservation of Niagara Falls. Among the most influential supporters was Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect famous for helping design Central Park in New York City.

Olmsted believed that natural wonders such as Niagara Falls should be preserved for everyone to enjoy. His ideas helped influence the movement that eventually led to the establishment of the Niagara Reservation, which later became Niagara Falls State Park.

Today, the park provides visitors with access to spectacular views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. The waterfalls themselves were formed thousands of years ago following the retreat of massive glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. As the glaciers melted, enormous quantities of water began flowing through the Great Lakes region, gradually carving the landscape that would become the Niagara River and Niagara Gorge.

Over thousands of years, erosion caused the waterfalls to move upstream, leaving behind the dramatic gorge that visitors can still see today. The Niagara River connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, carrying tremendous quantities of water through the region. Standing beside this natural wonder, it is almost impossible to comprehend the geological forces responsible for creating such an extraordinary landscape.

Recording Our Historical Video Beside the Falls

One of our primary goals during the visit was to record the history portion of our Niagara Falls State Park video. We selected a location near the falls where we could capture the incredible scenery in the background while discussing the historical significance of the area. Of course, recording a video beside Niagara Falls presents some interesting challenges. The waterfalls are incredibly loud, and the surrounding observation areas are filled with visitors enjoying the scenery. Finding a location where we could record without too much interference required a little patience.

However, this is one of the things we enjoy most about Our Haunted Travels.

Rather than simply sitting in a studio and discussing historical locations, we prefer to travel to the actual places and share their stories while standing where history happened. There is something special about discussing the formation of Niagara Falls while hearing the water rushing behind you. During our recording, we discussed the natural history of the falls, the development of the surrounding communities, and the important role Niagara Falls has played in American tourism. We also talked about the countless individuals who have been drawn to the waterfalls throughout history.

Long before European settlers arrived in the region, Indigenous peoples lived throughout the Niagara area. The river and surrounding landscape held important cultural, practical, and spiritual significance. As European exploration and settlement expanded, Niagara Falls became increasingly well known throughout the world. By the nineteenth century, it had developed into a major tourist destination, attracting artists, writers, politicians, honeymooners, adventurers, and curious travelers who wanted to witness its incredible beauty.

Unfortunately, the growing popularity of the falls also attracted individuals who believed they could achieve fame by challenging the dangerous waters. While some came simply to admire the breathtaking scenery, others were determined to test their courage against the tremendous power of the Niagara River, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Their stories would become an important part of our visit to Oakwood Cemetery.

Exploring the Ghost Stories and Folklore of Niagara Falls

After completing the historical portion of our video, we walked farther into the park to record the paranormal stories and folklore associated with Niagara Falls.

Although the waterfalls are famous for their natural beauty, the area also has a darker history.

Over the centuries, numerous people have lost their lives in the Niagara River. Some deaths were the result of accidents, while others involved deliberate attempts to challenge the falls or dangerous rapids.

There have also been suicides and other tragic incidents.

With so much death associated with the location, it is perhaps not surprising that Niagara Falls has developed a collection of ghost stories and supernatural legends.

One of the most famous traditional stories associated with Niagara Falls involves the Maid of the Mist. Various versions of this legend describe a young Indigenous woman who traveled over the falls in a canoe. Some versions portray her as a sacrifice, while others suggest she was attempting to escape an unhappy situation. The story has been retold and altered many times, and the popular versions should not automatically be treated as authentic Indigenous history. Nevertheless, the legend remains one of the best-known supernatural tales associated with Niagara Falls.

Other folklore describes mysterious figures appearing near the river, strange voices emerging from the mist, and shadowy apparitions disappearing along the edges of the gorge. Some stories involve people who supposedly witnessed ghostly figures standing dangerously close to the water, only to discover that the individuals had vanished when someone attempted to approach them.

The Niagara Gorge has also inspired reports of unexplained lights, mysterious sounds, and unusual experiences. While these accounts remain folklore and unverified paranormal claims, they contribute to the mysterious reputation of the region.

As we recorded these stories, we could not help noticing how easily the atmosphere changed depending on where we were standing. In one area, we were surrounded by tourists laughing, taking photographs, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. A short distance away, the rushing water, rising mist, and enormous cliffs created an entirely different feeling.

It is easy to understand how such an extraordinary location could inspire generations of ghost stories.

Taking Time to Enjoy Niagara Falls

After finishing our filming, we decided to spend some additional time simply enjoying the falls. Sometimes, during our travels, we become so focused on finding historical locations, recording videos, and researching stories that we forget to stop and appreciate the places we are visiting. Niagara Falls is definitely one of those places where you need to take a little extra time.

We watched tourists from around the world gather along the observation areas. Families were taking pictures, couples were enjoying the scenery, and people of all ages seemed completely amazed by the tremendous waterfalls. We also spent time observing the natural environment. The enormous volume of water rushing over the falls is difficult to comprehend, and the mist rising into the air creates a spectacular scene.

As we stood there watching the river, we found ourselves thinking again about the daredevils who had attempted to conquer Niagara Falls. After witnessing the tremendous power of the water, the idea of voluntarily entering the river inside a barrel seemed almost unbelievable. Yet several people had done exactly that. Some survived, while others were not so fortunate.

Eventually, we realized that we still had another important destination on our itinerary. After taking in the incredible scenery and appreciating the natural beauty of Niagara Falls, we made our way back to the car and headed toward Oakwood Cemetery.

Arriving at Historic Oakwood Cemetery

Oakwood Cemetery is one of the most historically significant burial grounds in Niagara Falls, New York. Established in 1852, the cemetery contains the graves of numerous individuals who played important roles in the development of the region. It is also famous for its connections to the daredevils who challenged Niagara Falls and the dangerous waters of the Niagara River. One of the most interesting areas of the cemetery is the Daredevil Section, where several individuals associated with Niagara Falls stunt history are buried or memorialized.

For us, visiting Oakwood Cemetery was an important part of the day's adventure. We had researched several individuals before arriving and wanted to locate their gravesites, take photographs, and record additional historical information. Our list included Annie Edson Taylor, Captain Matthew Webb, Kirk Jones, Homan John Walsh, Francis Abbott, and members of the Porter family. We also hoped to locate the grave of Maud Willard, whose tragic story is one of the lesser-known incidents associated with Niagara Falls.

As we began exploring the cemetery, we were reminded once again why we enjoy visiting historic burial grounds. Every headstone represents a person who lived an entire life. Some became internationally famous, others made important contributions to their communities, and some are remembered primarily because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding their deaths. Oakwood Cemetery contains all of these stories, preserving the memories of individuals whose lives became intertwined with the fascinating history of Niagara Falls.

Annie Edson Taylor: The First Woman to Conquer Niagara Falls

Annie Edson Taylor

One of the most famous gravesites we visited belonged to Annie Edson Taylor. Annie became internationally famous on October 24, 1901, when she became the first person known to survive a deliberate trip over Horseshoe Falls inside a barrel. What makes her accomplishment particularly remarkable is that she was 63 years old at the time. Annie had worked as a schoolteacher and experienced financial difficulties throughout her life.

She believed that successfully going over Niagara Falls in a barrel would bring her fame and financial security. To prepare for the dangerous stunt, she commissioned a specially constructed wooden barrel designed to withstand the tremendous force of the water. The barrel included padding intended to protect her from the violent impact.

On the day of the attempt, Annie entered the barrel and was released into the Niagara River above Horseshoe Falls. The current carried her toward the edge. Moments later, the barrel disappeared over the enormous waterfall. When rescuers eventually recovered it, Annie was still alive. Although she suffered injuries, including a cut to her head, she had survived an experience that many believed was impossible.

Unfortunately, her accomplishment did not provide the financial security she had hoped to achieve. Despite becoming internationally famous, Annie struggled financially during the remaining years of her life. She died in 1921 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery.

Annie Edson Taylor's grave

Standing at her grave was a fascinating experience, especially after spending time beside the falls earlier that afternoon. It was almost impossible to imagine what she must have experienced inside that barrel. Her story is one of courage, desperation, ambition, and the sometimes heartbreaking consequences of seeking fame.

Captain Matthew Webb: The Swimmer Who Could Not Defeat Niagara

Captain Matthew Webb

Another important gravesite we visited belonged to Captain Matthew Webb.

Webb was already an internationally celebrated athlete before his fatal encounter with the Niagara River. In 1875, he became the first person to successfully swim across the English Channel without artificial assistance. His accomplishment made him famous throughout the world and established his reputation as one of the greatest endurance swimmers of his time. However, in 1883, Webb decided to attempt an extraordinarily dangerous challenge. He planned to swim through the Niagara River rapids and the powerful Whirlpool Rapids downstream from the falls. Webb believed that his extraordinary swimming abilities would allow him to survive the turbulent waters.

On July 24, 1883, he entered the Niagara River and began his attempt. Although he initially appeared to be making progress, the powerful currents eventually overwhelmed him. He disappeared beneath the water and drowned. His body was recovered several days later, and he was buried at Oakwood Cemetery.

Unlike Annie Edson Taylor, Webb was not attempting to go over the waterfalls themselves. His challenge involved navigating the dangerous rapids downstream, where violent currents and powerful whirlpools created deadly conditions. His death shocked people who had followed his remarkable swimming career.

Visiting his grave gave us another opportunity to reflect on the incredible power of the Niagara River. Even one of the world's greatest swimmers could not overcome its dangerous currents.

Captain Matthew Webb

Kirk Jones: A Remarkable Survival and a Tragic Return

Kirk Jones

Another gravesite we visited was associated with Kirk Jones, whose story represents one of the more unusual chapters in modern Niagara Falls history. On October 20, 2003, Jones survived a plunge over Horseshoe Falls without the protection of a barrel or other specialized survival equipment. His survival was considered extraordinary. Very few people have survived such an experience, and his story quickly attracted international attention.

Unlike some historical daredevils who deliberately attempted dangerous stunts for publicity, Jones later connected his actions to a personal crisis. His survival became one of the most remarkable incidents in the modern history of Niagara Falls. However, his story would eventually take a tragic turn.

In 2017, Jones returned to Niagara Falls and attempted another plunge, reportedly using an inflatable ball. This time, he did not survive. His body was recovered downstream, bringing a tragic conclusion to the story of a man who had once survived an almost impossible encounter with the falls.

Kirk Jones's grave

During our visit to Oakwood Cemetery, we stopped at the gravesite connected to Kirk Jones and reflected on his remarkable and heartbreaking story. Having stood beside the falls earlier in the day, we found it difficult to comprehend how anyone could survive such a plunge without protection. His story is also an important reminder that not every incident involving Niagara Falls should be viewed simply as a daredevil stunt.

Behind these events are real people, personal struggles, and families whose lives were forever changed.

Homan John Walsh: The Boy Who Flew a Kite Across Niagara Gorge

Homan John Walsh

Another fascinating historical figure whose gravesite we visited was Homan John Walsh.

Unlike the individuals who attempted to survive the falls or rapids, Walsh became famous for an accomplishment that helped make an important engineering project possible. In 1848, when he was only a young boy, Walsh participated in a kite-flying competition intended to establish a line across the Niagara Gorge. Engineers needed a way to get a rope across the enormous gap so that construction of a suspension bridge could begin. Walsh successfully flew his kite across the gorge, allowing a line to be carried from one side to the other.

That initial line could then be used to pull progressively heavier ropes across the river. Eventually, the process helped make possible the construction of a suspension bridge connecting the United States and Canada. It was an extraordinary accomplishment for someone so young. Although flying a kite may seem like a simple activity, Walsh's achievement played an important role in overcoming a major engineering challenge.

His story demonstrates that the history of Niagara Falls is not limited to dangerous stunts and tragic accidents.

Homan John Walsh

It also includes remarkable examples of innovation, determination, and ingenuity. Visiting his gravesite at Oakwood Cemetery gave us an opportunity to remember a young boy whose accomplishment helped change transportation across the Niagara Gorge.

Francis Abbott: The Mysterious Hermit of Goat Island

Francis Abbott: The Mysterious Hermit of Goat Island

One of the most intriguing individuals whose gravesite we visited was Francis Abbott, remembered in Niagara Falls history as the Hermit of Goat Island. Abbott arrived in the Niagara Falls area in 1829 and quickly became a subject of curiosity. He was described as an educated and unusual individual who preferred solitude and spent much of his time surrounded by the natural beauty of Goat Island. Historical accounts describe Abbott as someone who enjoyed music, poetry, and quiet contemplation. He reportedly spent hours observing the waterfalls, listening to the rushing water, and enjoying the isolation of the island.

His unusual lifestyle attracted considerable attention from visitors. Some considered him eccentric, while others viewed him as a thoughtful man who simply wanted to escape the pressures of society. Whatever his reasons, Abbott became one of the most unusual personalities associated with early Niagara Falls history. Unfortunately, his life ended tragically in June 1831, when he drowned while bathing in the Niagara River. His body was recovered, and his death became another tragic chapter in the history of the falls. Because Abbott died before Oakwood Cemetery was established, the burial history associated with his memorial is particularly interesting. During our visit, we stopped at the gravesite associated with Francis Abbott and discussed his unusual life and mysterious reputation.

Abbott's story has also become connected to the folklore of Niagara Falls. Some legends suggest that the spirit of the Hermit of Goat Island continues to wander the places where he once sought peace and solitude. Stories describe mysterious figures appearing near the river, only to disappear without explanation. Other versions of the legend suggest that Abbott's spirit remains attached to the natural beauty of Goat Island. Although these tales remain folklore, they add an intriguing supernatural dimension to the life of an already mysterious historical figure.

Francis Abbott grave

For us, Francis Abbott represents exactly the type of story we enjoy researching. His life is historically fascinating, his death was tragic, and the legends surrounding him continue to capture the imagination.

The Porter Family: Pioneers Who Helped Shape Niagara Falls

Another important stop during our visit involved the graves of members of the Porter family. The Porter family played a significant role in the early development of Niagara Falls and the surrounding region. One of the most prominent members was Augustus Porter, an early settler, businessman, and landowner who became closely associated with the American side of Niagara Falls. Augustus and his brother Peter Buell Porter were influential figures in the history of western New York. Peter Buell Porter served in the United States Congress, played an important military role during the War of 1812, and later served as United States Secretary of War under President John Quincy Adams.

The Porter family's activities extended into transportation, commerce, land development, and tourism. During the nineteenth century, members of the family controlled significant property near Niagara Falls, and their decisions helped shape the development of the surrounding community. The family also had connections to Goat Island and other important locations near the waterfalls. Their story reflects the transformation of Niagara Falls from a relatively remote natural wonder into an internationally recognized tourist destination.

Visiting the Porter family graves was particularly interesting because it allowed us to explore another side of Niagara Falls history. While daredevils and dramatic tragedies often receive the most attention, the individuals who helped establish the surrounding communities are equally important. The Porter family helped create the foundations for the Niagara Falls that visitors experience today.

Our Search for the Grave of Maud Willard

Maud Willard
Maud Willard with Carlisle Graham along the American Rapids. Willard was killed riding a barrel through the Whirlpool Rapids on September 7th 1901.

One of the individuals we were especially interested in finding was Maud Willard. Her story is one of the more tragic incidents associated with the dangerous waters of the Niagara River. In 1901, Willard participated in an attempt to navigate the Whirlpool Rapids inside a barrel. The stunt was intended to demonstrate that a person could survive the powerful currents while protected inside a specially constructed container. Willard entered the barrel with her pet fox terrier, and the barrel was released into the river and carried through the dangerous rapids.

Although the barrel survived the journey, the attempt ended in tragedy. When it was recovered, Maud Willard was found dead, while her dog had survived. Willard's death was attributed to suffocation, making the incident particularly heartbreaking because the protective barrel had remained intact. Her story demonstrates that the dangers associated with these stunts extended far beyond drowning or being crushed by the force of the water. Even when a barrel survived the journey, the person inside could still face deadly conditions.

Before arriving at Oakwood Cemetery, we had hoped to locate Maud Willard's grave and document it as part of our visit. Unfortunately, this proved much more difficult than expected. We drove through different sections of the cemetery, walked among the headstones, and searched for the location. As anyone who follows Our Haunted Travels knows, searching for historical graves can sometimes become an adventure of its own. Even when we have researched a burial location in advance, finding the actual grave marker is not always easy. Some cemeteries are enormous, while others have older sections where the headstones are difficult to read or partially obscured. Occasionally, burial information does not match the physical layout of the cemetery. We have spent hours searching for graves during previous trips, sometimes discovering that we had walked past the correct location several times.

Maud Willard

Unfortunately, our search for Maud Willard was unsuccessful. We spent approximately an hour trying to locate her grave, and by that point, the daylight was beginning to fade. We were also becoming increasingly aware of how long our day had been. Eventually, we made the difficult decision to stop searching. Although we were disappointed, we knew that continuing to wander through the cemetery as darkness approached was not the best idea. Perhaps someday we will return and have another opportunity to locate her grave. For now, her tragic story and our unsuccessful search remain memorable parts of our Niagara Falls adventure.

The Ghost Stories and Folklore of Oakwood Cemetery

In addition to documenting the historical graves, we also recorded information about the ghost stories and paranormal folklore associated with Oakwood Cemetery. Like many historic cemeteries, Oakwood has developed a reputation for mysterious experiences and unusual stories. The cemetery contains generations of history, including the graves of individuals whose lives ended under extraordinary circumstances.

Oakwood Cemetery, Mossuleum

Some cemetery folklore describes shadowy figures moving among the headstones, particularly during the evening hours. Other stories involve unexplained footsteps, mysterious voices, and strange sensations experienced by visitors. There are also tales involving unusual lights and the feeling that someone is watching from a distance.

The Daredevil Section is particularly interesting because of the dramatic lives and deaths of the people associated with it. Folklore sometimes connects the cemetery's mysterious atmosphere to the spirits of individuals who attempted to challenge Niagara Falls. The idea that these adventurous personalities might continue to linger near their graves is certainly an intriguing one.

Some stories suggest that individuals who died suddenly or tragically may remain connected to places associated with their lives. Although these claims have not been established as supernatural events, they remain part of the folklore surrounding historic burial grounds. As we drove through Oakwood Cemetery, we stopped in different areas to record the paranormal portion of our video.

One of the things we enjoy most about exploring these locations is being able to connect the legends to actual historical events.

Sometimes the documented history is even more fascinating than the ghost stories.

In the case of Oakwood Cemetery, the lives of the individuals buried there provide more than enough material for an extraordinary historical adventure.

Reflecting on the Daredevils and Historical Figures

As our visit to Oakwood Cemetery came to an end, we found ourselves reflecting on the remarkable individuals whose gravesites we had visited. **Annie Edson Taylor** risked her life in hopes of finding fame and financial security. **Captain Matthew Webb** believed his extraordinary swimming abilities would allow him to conquer the dangerous Niagara Rapids. **Kirk Jones** survived an almost impossible plunge over Horseshoe Falls, only to lose his life during a later return. **Homan John Walsh** helped make the construction of a suspension bridge possible through an extraordinary childhood accomplishment.

**Francis Abbott** sought peace and solitude near the waterfalls before tragically drowning in the Niagara River, while **the Porter family** helped shape the development of Niagara Falls and the surrounding community. Then there was **Maud Willard**, whose grave we were unable to locate, who lost her life during a dangerous attempt to navigate the Whirlpool Rapids. These individuals came from different backgrounds and lived very different lives, yet each became connected to the history of Niagara Falls.

Their stories demonstrate the extraordinary influence that this natural wonder has had on generations of people. Some were inspired by its beauty, while others saw opportunities for adventure, fame, or financial success. A few became victims of its tremendous power. Regardless of their motivations or circumstances, each left behind a story that became part of the region's fascinating history.

After spending time beside the waterfalls earlier that afternoon, visiting these gravesites made their stories feel much more personal. We had seen the water, heard its thunderous roar, and watched the river rush toward the edge. Now, we were standing among the graves of people whose lives had become part of that history. It was a powerful reminder that behind the legends, daring accomplishments, and tragic events were real people whose stories deserve to be remembered.

Ending Our Day at Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino

Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino

By the time we finished exploring Oakwood Cemetery, we were more than ready to call it a day. We had spent hours walking, filming, researching, and searching for graves. Although we had accomplished a great deal, we were also exhausted.

We made our way to the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, where we would be spending the night. After arriving at the hotel and getting settled into our room, we decided that we had absolutely no desire to go back out. Instead, we enjoyed dinner in our room and took some time to relax.

Sometimes, after a long day of traveling, there is nothing better than sitting down, enjoying a quiet meal, and knowing that you do not have to go anywhere else for the evening. As we relaxed, we reflected on everything we had experienced.

Niagara Falls State Park had provided incredible scenery and a fascinating opportunity to discuss the history and legends surrounding the waterfalls. Oakwood Cemetery had allowed us to visit the gravesites of several remarkable historical figures and learn more about the people whose lives became connected to the Niagara River.

Although we had not managed to find Maud Willard's grave, we had recorded plenty of material and captured photographs that would help us share these stories with our viewers. Most importantly, we had experienced another memorable day together during our summer travels.

Why Niagara Falls Is So Much More Than a Tourist Attraction

For many people, visiting Niagara Falls is simply about seeing the waterfalls and taking photographs. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. The falls are one of the most spectacular natural attractions in North America, and experiencing them in person is something everyone should have an opportunity to do.

However, Niagara Falls has so much more to offer than beautiful scenery.

Its history includes Indigenous communities, early European exploration, the development of international tourism, major engineering accomplishments, and generations of families who helped shape the surrounding region. It also includes extraordinary human stories.

There are the daredevils who risked everything in hopes of achieving fame. There are the tragic stories of individuals who underestimated the power of the Niagara River. There are the pioneers who helped transform the area into a thriving community.

And there are the legends.

The mysterious Hermit of Goat Island, the traditional stories surrounding the Maid of the Mist, the ghostly figures reportedly seen near the river, and the paranormal folklore associated with Oakwood Cemetery all contribute to the area's mysterious reputation.

Whether someone believes in ghosts or simply enjoys historical mysteries, Niagara Falls offers an incredible collection of stories waiting to be discovered. Our visit reminded us once again why we enjoy combining historical research with paranormal folklore.

The documented history provides the foundation for understanding a location.

The legends reveal how people have remembered, interpreted, and sometimes transformed those events into stories passed from one generation to another. Together, they create a much richer picture of the places we explore.

Another Unforgettable Adventure for Our Haunted Travels

Looking back on July 12, 2026, this was one of those travel days that perfectly represents what Our Haunted Travels is all about. We visited one of the most famous natural wonders in the world, walked along the Niagara River, and witnessed the incredible power of the waterfalls. We recorded the history of Niagara Falls State Park while standing beside the rushing water, explored the park, and discussed the ghost stories and folklore associated with the region.

We then traveled to Oakwood Cemetery, where we visited the gravesites of Annie Edson Taylor, Captain Matthew Webb, Kirk Jones, Homan John Walsh, Francis Abbott, and members of the Porter family. We also spent nearly an hour searching for the grave of Maud Willard, unfortunately without success. Finally, after a long and exhausting day, we returned to our hotel room at Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, enjoyed dinner, and settled in for a well-deserved night's rest.

Not every adventure ends with every question answered or every grave located. Sometimes, the locations we fail to find become just as memorable as the ones we successfully visit. They give us reasons to return, continue our research, and discover more about the people and places that make history so fascinating.

For us, Niagara Falls will always be remembered for its breathtaking natural beauty, but it will also be remembered for the remarkable individuals whose lives became intertwined with the Niagara River. People who dreamed of fame, people who accomplished extraordinary things, people who helped build a community, and people whose lives ended tragically in the shadow of one of the world's most powerful waterfalls. Their stories deserve to be remembered.

That is why we continue to travel, research, explore, and document these historic locations. There is always another story waiting to be discovered, another forgotten name waiting to be remembered, and another mysterious legend waiting to be explored.
