One of the most eerie urban legends from Ohio is the tale of the Gore Orphanage. It entails some of the most fascinating details about how some historical elements from different time periods and locations have melted into one urban legend that has lasted for well over 100 years. In this episode of our podcast, we explore some of the confusion surrounding that legend. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page for a link to the extended version of this podcast, which has links and images from all of our research and is available on our Patreon page.

Deep in the woods near Vermilion, along what locals now call Gore Orphanage Road, lies one of Ohio’s most haunting legends. The story begins in the early 1900s when the Gore Orphanage was said to house children who had nowhere else to go. The orphanage sat isolated among thick trees and muddy paths, far from town, where the wind moved through the branches like whispers in the dark, and it was run by old man Gore.

According to the most chilling version of the legend, tragedy struck one winter night when a fire erupted inside the building. Some say a lantern was knocked over, while others claim faulty wiring started the blaze. The flames spread quickly through the wooden structure, trapping children and caretakers inside before help could arrive from the distant town. By the time the fire died out, the orphanage had been reduced to charred ruins.

Locals soon began reporting strange things in the woods where the orphanage once stood. Travelers claimed they heard faint children’s laughter drifting through the trees when no one was there. Others said they could hear crying late at night, as if echoes from the past still lingered among the ruins. On quiet evenings, some visitors swore they saw small figures darting between the trees or pale shapes standing near the old stone foundations.

Over time, the legend grew darker. Teenagers exploring the abandoned site said they found rusted toys buried in the dirt or tiny handprints appearing in the dust on their cars after leaving the woods. Some visitors even reported that their flashlights or phones would suddenly stop working when they approached the old foundations.

Today, the original orphanage building is gone, leaving only scattered stone remains hidden along hiking trails in Vermilion Township. While historians debate whether the tragic fire ever happened the way the legend claims, the eerie reputation of the woods has never faded.

Even now, locals say that if you walk the trail after sunset and stand quietly among the ruins, the forest sometimes grows strangely silent… and in that silence, you might hear something that sounds very much like the distant voices of children who never left the woods.
